Reports from the US embassy in Beijing said a device which looks like a bomb exploded at the south-east corner of the compound.
The police described the bomb as a “suspected firecracker device” which caused a blast.
Officials confirmed that a man set off a small explosive device to the embassy in Beijing. Apart from the attacker, no injury was reported and the response of the police at the scene was immediate.
The bomber injured his hand during the incident but no threat to his life as he was taken immediately to the hospital.
Reporters at the scene say that normal activities have resumed at the embassy, with people queuing up for visa applications.
Also reports revealed that a woman had tried to set herself on fire near the embassy, hours before the blast. It is quite unclear if the incident is linked.
China blamed the attack on Muslim Uighur separatists.
