A former Publicity Secretary of the defunct National Party of Nigeria, Chief Abiola Ogundokun, has said that the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, is not competent to strip him of his traditional and religious chieftaincy titles.
Ogundokun, who said this in a statement in Osogbo on Tuesday, stated that the monarch moved against him because he advised him against some of his alleged despicable acts.
The chief said the Oluwo was not competent to strip him of the chieftaincy titles.
The statement read, “The pronouncement of Oba Adewale was laughable. It is only the Imam of Iwo that has the requisite power to strip me of the title of Basorun Musulumi given to me over 18 years ago, while my title of Otun Balogun was conferred on me about 40 years ago for my good works and development of Iwo land which remains sacrosanct through a letter of conferment.
“Oluwo, you cannot remove me because you lack the competence to do so and soon we will sack you.
“I remain myself, High Chief Abiola Ogundokun, the Basorun Musulumi of Iwo land, the Otun Balogun of Iwo land, the Aare-ago of Iwo-Oke, the Seriki of Iba, the Apesin of Erin-Osun, and the Ajagunpote of The Source, Jagun of Ajagunlaase among many others.
“Oluwo should go and face the moral burden of the criminal allegation levelled against him by the Oluwo-Oke, which he vigorously begged me to intervene and begged Oluwo-Oke to withdraw from the court, even with the help of former President Olusegun Obasanjo at my instance.”
Oluwo could not be reached to comment on Ogundokun’s position.
However, a source close to the Oluwo’s palace told our correspondent that Oba Akanbi would not dignify Ogundokun with an answer on the issue.
He said, “Kabiyesi does not want to respond to any of his allegations and he has instructed us not to reply him.
“Kabiyesi has stripped him of all the chieftaincy titles and there is nothing he can do about it. Is Mr. Ogundokun the custodian of chieftaincy titles?
“Kabiyesi can confer chieftaincy titles on anyone and he can also strip such person of such titles.”
Asked if Ogundokun had the power to dethrone the Oluwo, the source said, “Is Mr. Ogundokun among the kingmakers? He is from Oloola family, their work is to circumcise children and that has been stopped. He is an ordinary man like anybody now.”
