Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo is the new Chief of Naval Staff of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, appointed on the 26th of January, 2021, by President Muhammadu Buhari. He has taken over from Vice Admiral, Ibot Ekwe-Ibas, making him the 23rd person to occupy the position.
Rear Admiral A-Z, Gambo hails from Kano State and has been in the Nigerian Navy since 1984. Prior his appointment as Chief of Naval Staff, he was Director of Procurement at the Defence Space Administration. He holds a PhD in Transport Management and a Masters Degree in Transport Management (Logistic Option), both from Ladoke Akintola University.
He is also a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management, NIM; Fellow of the Certified Institute of Shipping; Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria, as well as a fellow of the National Defence College South Africa.
The outgoing Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibot Ekwe-Ibas, has advised his successor to sustain pressure on oil thieves and secure the nation’s maritime sector.
