CBN has issued a stern warning to all party lovers, ‘owambe’ attendees and every Nigerian that enjoys getting some cash flying in the air to spice up events.
Condemning the rate at which Nigerians mutilate, deface, squeeze and even spray and sell the naira notes, CBN has threatened that “abuse of the currency attracts a penalty of not less than six months in jail or a fine of not less than N50,000 or both.”
This was made known by An Assistant Director at the Currency Operations Department, Aladeen Badajo, on Thursday, in Abeokuta, during a CBN sensitization programme.
Badejo who urged the people to see the NAIRA as a symbol of national identity, also stressed the need to handle the banknotes with care and dignity, went on to express concern over the huge amount being spent on reprinting them.
He said, “Abuse of the currency attracts a penalty of not less than six months or a fine of not less than N50,000 or both.”
