Two feared dead, others injured in Lagos auto crash

At least two people were feared dead and several others injured in a crash involving a Bus Rapid Transit vehicle and a commercial bus on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos State.

An eye witness, Taiwo Yusuf, confirmed that the incident happened at Ile-Epo, Agege around 8pm when the two vehicles had a frontal collision.

He claims that the commercial bus driver passed through the BRT lane due to the closure of the Ile-Epo side of the expressway as a result of the ongoing rehabilitation works on the road.

However, the bus driver, who was said to be driving on a high speed, reportedly overtook other motorists and crashed into the BRT vehicle, which was coming from the opposite direction.

While trying to provide further explanations, the eye witness said, “He should have exercised patience and followed others on the lane which commercial buses were allowed to use. Instead, he tried to go in the opposite direction and that was what caused that accident,”.

Another eye witness, Owolabi Adisa, a commercial driver while giving his own count of what had happened blamed the accident on the poor state of the Ile-Epo side of the road, which he said was narrow and always flooded.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Olusegun Ogedengbe, when contacted said he was not aware of the crash.

Also, the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, had yet to respond to enquiries on the incident.

Furthermore, all efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Olumide Filade, were futile.
